Meet Camden County’s Legendary Hard Hat Crew! 26 Years Strong!
For more than a quarter-century, Friday night football in Camden County has included a familiar sight: a group of dedicated Wildcat supporters proudly wearing hard hats painted in Camden blue and featuring the Wildcat paw. They are the Camden County Hard Hat Crew, and in 2026 they are celebrating an incredible 26 years of supporting Camden County football, its players, coaches and community.
What began with one hard hat around the year 2000 has grown into a Camden County tradition with roughly 20 to 25 members. The idea started when one of the original members saw a similar concept on television and decided to create a hard hat that looked like a football helmet. After having one painted with the Camden paw, he began wearing it around the stadium. Soon, other Wildcat fans wanted their own.
And just like that, a tradition was born.
More Than Just Football Fans
The Hard Hat Crew may be easy to recognize because of the helmets, but their story goes much deeper than what they wear on Friday nights.
At its heart, the group is about supporting and encouraging Camden County's young people.Members of the crew have spent years attending practices, standing alongside players through the heat, rain and cold, and showing up when encouragement mattered most. Former players still approach members of the group years later and tell them they remember that support.
As one member explained during the interview:
“The Hard Hat Crew is all about uplifting the kids, motivating them, and just being supportive to them.”
That commitment has continued from one generation to the next. The crew even recalled an eight-year-old who once participated with the Hard Hat Crew and is now a freshman football player himself.
A Tradition Built Around Friday Nights
There's another Hard Hat Crew tradition that may be just as legendary as the helmets:
The tailgate.
According to the crew, they haven't missed a Friday night tailgate in 26 years.
Rain or shine, they show up. Members begin arriving hours before kickoff, firing up the grill and getting ready for another night of Camden County football. Their tailgates have also been about hospitality. Players staying after school would stop by for food, coaches began stopping by, and the tradition continued to grow.
They don't charge people who stop by to eat. The philosophy is simple: if you're there and you're hungry, grab a plate.
For the Hard Hat Crew, that sense of giving back is part of what being a Wildcat is all about.
When Camden County Needed Football — and Each Other
One of the most powerful stories shared by the crew goes back to 2002, when the local mill closed.
The mill had employed hundreds of people and had been a major supporter of the Quarterback Club. One Hard Hat Crew member recalled the difficult atmosphere surrounding Camden County as families faced uncertainty.
Then Camden County football showed what community really means. Coach Jeff Herron had the football players gather at the mill's main gate to greet workers. For those employees, that show of support meant more than wins and losses. The community rallied together.Camden's 2002 season eventually ended one game short of the state championship. Out of that disappointment came a simple message:
“Finish what you start.”
One year later, the Wildcats did exactly that, capturing the 2003 state championship.
For members of the Hard Hat Crew who lived through those moments, the championship represented more than a trophy. It represented a community that had endured a difficult time and found something to rally around together.
They Were There for the Championship Years
Twenty-six years of support means the Hard Hat Crew has witnessed some of the greatest moments in Camden County football history. They were there for the championship seasons of 2003, 2008 and 2009. For one member, 2003 holds an especially meaningful place because three of his sons played on that championship team. But the crew's dedication hasn't been limited to Chris Gilman Stadium.When Camden travels, they've traveled too including trips as far away as Fort Lauderdale and Ohio. Their attitude is simple: Wherever the Wildcats are playing, that's where they want to be.
Football, Education and Building Young People
The Hard Hat Crew also emphasized that supporting Camden County football isn't only about what happens on the field. They stressed the importance of academics, accountability and education, pointing out that players must handle their schoolwork in order to earn the opportunity to play.
As one crew member put it:
“We're all about kids, education. Education comes first.”
That perspective helps explain why the Hard Hat Crew has lasted for more than two decades. The hard hats may represent football, but the mission is about people.
26 Years Strong — and Still Going
Traditions don't last 26 years by accident. They last because people care enough to keep showing up.
For the Camden County Hard Hat Crew, that means showing up at practice. Showing up at the tailgate. Traveling to road games. Feeding people. Encouraging players. Supporting coaches. Celebrating championships. Standing with the community during difficult times. And, of course, making sure nobody leaves for the game without their hard hat.
Twenty-six years after the first Camden paw was painted onto one of those helmets, the Hard Hat Crew remains part of what makes Friday nights in Camden County special.
They're more than fans. They're part of the history, tradition and heartbeat of Camden County Wildcat Football.
