Wildcats Rise to the Occasion: Camden Defeats Richmond Hill 40–27 for First Region Victory
Special teams heroics, a first-half defensive stand, and explosive fourth-quarter plays lift Camden County to victory on a night celebrating seniors, military service, and community pride.
KINGSLAND, GA — Friday night at Chris Gilman Stadium was about more than football. With the stands dressed in pink, military service members and veterans being honored, and Camden County’s seniors taking center stage, Wildcat Nation came together for an evening filled with pride, tradition, and celebration.
And when the final whistle sounded, the Wildcats had given their community one more reason to celebrate.
Behind an outstanding special teams performance, a dominant first-half defensive effort, and timely fourth-quarter touchdowns, Camden County defeated Richmond Hill 40–27 on October 16, securing its first Region 1-7A victory of the 2026 season.
The win improved Camden County to 5–3 overall and provided head coach Tucker Pruitt and his Wildcats with valuable momentum as they enter the final stretch of the regular season.
A Defensive Statement Sets the Tone
Camden County came out determined to establish control, and the Wildcats wasted little time making their presence felt.
The defense set the tone early, keeping Richmond Hill off the scoreboard throughout the opening half while creating opportunities for Camden to build an advantage.
One of the night’s most electrifying moments came when senior Keaundrae Walker (#77) broke through to block a Richmond Hill field goal attempt. Senior Sean Green (#3) capitalized on the play, turning the blocked kick into a touchdown and igniting the home crowd.
The momentum-changing play was a perfect example of Camden’s determination to make an impact in every phase of the game.
The Wildcats continued applying defensive pressure, disrupting Richmond Hill’s offensive rhythm and preventing the visitors from finding the end zone before halftime.
Senior Kingston Melton (#2) contributed an interception, while senior Cedric Davis (#7) added a fumble recovery. Camden’s defense also recorded three sacks and three passes defended, highlighting an aggressive effort that helped establish control of the contest.
By halftime, the Wildcats had built a 16–0 advantage, putting themselves in position to capture their first region victory.
Vermilyea Delivers a Performance to Remember
While Camden’s defense established the foundation, senior kicker Jacob Vermilyea (#96) delivered one of the night’s most impressive individual performances.
Vermilyea connected on all four of his field goal attempts, accounting for 12 points and providing the Wildcats with a dependable scoring option throughout the evening.
Three of those field goals came during the opening half, allowing Camden to capitalize on offensive possessions and steadily build its lead.
His fourth successful attempt came in the second half, completing a perfect night that showcased his consistency and composure.
But Vermilyea was far from the only Wildcat making an impact on special teams.
Between Walker’s blocked field goal, Green’s touchdown, and another explosive scoring play still to come, Camden County repeatedly demonstrated how special teams can change the course of a football game.
Richmond Hill Responds, but Camden Refuses to Fold
After being shut out through the opening two quarters, Richmond Hill began finding success offensively in the second half.
The visitors scored eight points in the third quarter and continued pressing throughout the fourth, eventually putting 27 second-half points on the scoreboard.
What had been a comfortable Camden County advantage became a test of the Wildcats’ ability to respond under pressure.
But each time Richmond Hill threatened to seize momentum, Camden County answered.
Rather than allowing the visitors to complete their comeback, the Wildcats leaned on their playmakers and continued finding ways to put points on the board.
That determination would prove especially important during an action-packed final quarter.
Fourth-Quarter Fireworks Seal the Victory
With Richmond Hill continuing to battle, Camden County’s offense and special teams delivered several of the night’s biggest moments.
Junior quarterback Jakavious Perkins (#8) powered his way into the end zone on a quarterback sneak, adding another touchdown as the Wildcats worked to maintain control.
Then sophomore Malakhi Poole (#10) brought Chris Gilman Stadium to its feet.
Poole fielded a Richmond Hill kickoff and raced 75 yards for a touchdown, delivering Camden County’s first kickoff return touchdown of the season.
The explosive play demonstrated the speed and athleticism that make Poole a dangerous weapon whenever the football is in his hands.
He finished the night with 133 kickoff return yards on three returns, averaging an impressive 44.3 yards per attempt.
With Richmond Hill continuing to fight, senior Jesse Newsome (#20) delivered the finishing blow.
Newsome battled his way into the end zone for a fourth-quarter touchdown, extending Camden County’s lead to 40–27 with just 2:31 remaining in the contest.
The score provided the final separation Camden needed, effectively sealing a hard-fought region victory.
Special Teams Make the Difference
Football is often described as a game of three phases, and Friday night’s victory demonstrated just how important each one can be.
Camden County’s special teams unit delivered a series of performances that helped shape the outcome. Jacob Vermilyea’s four successful field goals provided 12 valuable points.
Keaundrae Walker’s blocked field goal and Sean Green’s subsequent touchdown turned a Richmond Hill scoring opportunity into points for Camden.
Malakhi Poole’s 75-yard kickoff return touchdown added another explosive scoring play at a critical moment.
Those contributions, combined with the Wildcats’ defensive performance and timely offensive execution, helped Camden County withstand Richmond Hill’s second-half surge.
It was a complete team effort, with players stepping forward in different situations to deliver when their team needed them most.
A Night Honoring Service, Strength, and Wildcat Pride
Beyond the excitement on the field, Friday night carried special meaning for the Camden County community.
Chris Gilman Stadium hosted three important celebrations, each representing a different part of the tradition and spirit that make Wildcat Nation special.
As part of Military Appreciation Night, Camden County recognized the active-duty service members and veterans who have dedicated themselves to serving our nation.
With Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay located in the heart of Camden County, military service is deeply connected to the community. Thousands of military families have called Camden County home, and their contributions extend far beyond the gates of the installation.
From those currently serving to the veterans who have worn the uniform before them, the evening provided an opportunity for Wildcat Nation to express its gratitude for their service, commitment, and sacrifice.
The night also featured Camden County’s annual Pink Out, bringing awareness to breast cancer and showing support for those who have battled the disease.
The student section, marching band, cheerleaders, players, and fans embraced the occasion, filling Chris Gilman Stadium with pink and creating a powerful display of unity.
Adding to the significance was Senior Night, recognizing the young men who have dedicated years of hard work and commitment to the Camden County football program.
For these seniors and their families, the evening represented countless early mornings, demanding practices, sacrifices, and memories made while wearing the blue and white.
Earning a region victory on such a meaningful night made the celebration even sweeter.
Three celebrations. One community. And a football team determined to give Wildcat Nation something to cheer about. Friday night delivered all of it.
The Road Ahead
With the victory, Camden County improves to 5–3 overall and secures its first Region 1-7A win of the season.
The Wildcats now turn their attention to two important matchups that will help shape their postseason opportunities.
First comes a road trip to Valdosta, where Camden will face another challenging region opponent in one of South Georgia’s most storied football environments.
The Wildcats will then return to Chris Gilman Stadium for their regular-season finale against Colquitt County.
Both games present significant challenges, but Friday night’s performance provides Camden with something valuable heading into the final stretch: momentum and confidence.
For head coach Tucker Pruitt and his Wildcats, the victory represents another step forward for a program continuing to establish its identity.
The Wildcats demonstrated physicality, resilience, and the ability to create game-changing opportunities in all three phases of the game.
Most importantly, they found a way to finish.
On a night dedicated to honoring service, celebrating strength, and recognizing commitment, Camden County delivered a victory worthy of the occasion.
The first region win is secured. The season is far from finished. And the Wildcats still have plenty left to fight for.
ALL CAMDEN.
